Seika Yochien Art Exhibition

Saturday was the art exhibition at Seika Yochien (Dougie's Japanese preschool/kindergarten).  If you are a connoisseur of kids' art, then this is the place for you!

When we went last year, I was unsure of what we would find since Dougie had never been one to put a writing stick to paper (or anything else, thankfully).  I wasn't even sure he could draw.  Turned out, he could draw a face, with eyes, nose, mouth and hair!  If we had any questions about where we were sending him to school, they were answered that day!

A year later, the advancement in skills are so clear.  These kids really work hard for a couple of months before this to get projects made.  The end-results are some amazing kids' art!

Painting of their Sweet Potato digging field trip
 Usagi (Rabbits)
Dougie still claims he did NOT make this one...
 Christmas Tree
I think they look like knee joints (femur to tibia...)
 a bee...
 Dougie's teacher, Osawa Sensei

They do a number of projects around the Year of the...  2012 is the Year of the Dragon, thus:
Each class makes, and displays, their dragon with the school's dragon (the main one in the back)
Rose Class' Dragon (note the tissue box shape...)
Dougie's dragon
The Kiiro (yellow) bus driver - the kids all want to gather acorns for good luck.  He is more than happy to dole them out!

I think these were Dougie's favorites!  Clay Shinkansen (Bullet trains)!

Then they got to ride on a "real" Shinkansen...
Seika has a little lawn mower engine powered train they bring out during these events.  The kids all wait in line for their turn and then run back to get in line again.  Ian loved it, except for the horn... (notice the hands over the ears!)

Conductor...

  1. I love these photos. I especially like the "Train Spotting" one! Hope no little ones fell on the train, though that would be kind of cool! Kind of like Indiana Jones leaping onto a train to get the bad guy, or escape a snake!! Thanks for sharing, Hallie. ALWAYS love to see what you all are up to way far away!!

    1. Thank you!!! If you think the photos are great - you should see what the kids DO! These pics don't do any justice to their work. The Japanese schools take art really seriously. LOVE IT!!! Turns out, Stefan is our budding artist :) I will post something on that soon :)
The kids got a bigger kick out of being above the train than on it. It was hilarious to watch. I think I had to stop Dougie once, because he was trying to lower himself down on it... Crazy kid... ;)
